I Make The Bed
Kanerva
It’s 5 a.m., I make the bed
the corners crisp, the lies unsaid
your sipping coffee or perhaps tea
you sit downstairs, waiting or not waiting for me

I own a mattress, I change the sheets
soon I’ll descend, admit defeat
we’ll raise our voices, we’ll whisper tears
and then one will stay and one disappear

The smells of sex and those of sweat
are in the laundry, time to forget
I make the bed, it’s almost dawn
you wait downstairs or perhaps your gone

I fluff the pillows, killing time
afraid of conflict, afraid of lies
it’s almost over, we’ll just speak our parts
but I’m not ready for the end to start

I make the bed, it’s 5 a.m.
tear off the sheets and start all over again
you sit downstairs, how long will you wait
I want to sleep, to postpone fate

we slept together, almost a year
now it’s over, that much is clear
with simple words we’ll try to say
I love you still but now go away
