Economies of Friendship
After the nihilism, we tried to instill hope
it took awhile, but it sort of worked
there was a disease and it ravaged half the world
that’s how we found out where our errors lurked

After the nihilism, we tried to instill hope
entire cities burning, whole nations bereft
there was a disease and it ravaged half the world
but even if it kills 3 million there’s still be 3 million left

somewhere there’s satisfaction
utopian vigilance and then
small villages of 200
where everyone knows your problems
and tries to help

you’re learning about life and people
convinced there’s another kind of wealth
sometimes it’s claustrophobic
but at least you’re not alone
and trying to save yourself

After the end, I was standing in a field
it was a cliché, but it sort of works
carting the bodies from one end to the next
the pay was nothing and there were no perks

after the end, I was standing in an endless field
you work, don’t think, just grief and sweat
carting the bodies from one end to the next
but even when they’re dead and buried you still
need alcohol to forget

wake up and make the coffee, if there’s coffee
if not wake up and make the tea
small villages of 200
look out window
make sure there’s still nothing to see

economies of friendship
form, disperse, generate a little warmth
tattered copy of some old novel
read, re-read
cradled in your arms
