Theatre Director
As everyone knows, I worked as a theatre director
I stood on the stage
tried to tell the actors what to do
it was a strange life
both generous and unforgiving
in that swamp of artifice
trying to find a little something’s that’s true

I once got a job
at a theatre not far from the river
every morning I’d walk along water
to get to the stage
nature is cruel
but that cruelty still can deliver
us from an inner life
little more than inarticulate rage

Then one morning the rains wouldn’t stop
and the whole town was flooded
the theatre was flooded, was cracked
was half floating away
we were up to our chests in the mud
and the stale dirty water
we set aside our work
and decided not to stage the play

We went into the streets
there was work to be done
we helped best that we could
we weren’t the only ones
we saw peoples lives
which had all just been drowned
but also life went on
mud was thick on the ground
