We both knew that I didn’t want to own you
just hold you in my awkward, stumbling way
embraces were defaced, now I’ve outgrown you
I sit here, watch the hours turn to days

you tried to get away, it wasn’t easy
in that sleazy, joyous way you tried to flee
I tired to get away, you wouldn’t let me
I almost understood, could not believe

I think I got a postcard
can’t remember what it said
do you remember what you wrote me
with those words made out of lead

and I tried to write you letters
in my literary way
but the sentiments were fiction
and my heart made out of clay

Perhaps I lied, had wanted you forever
was haunted by your smile, by your laugh
at least we tried, I tried not to be clever
tried to build a love out of black mass

it’s over now, the heroes are forgiven
it’s just begun: will you call, write or forget
this loneliness has force, it’s truly driven
to heights of horror, moments of regret

I think I got a postcard
can’t remember what it said
do you remember what you wrote me
with those words that nearly bled

and the hours have grown heavy
in their literary way
but now time is just a carrousel
for longing and dismay
